The Thylacine is Australia’s most famous extinct animal, although certainly not the only one. The story of the demise of this unique creature is one of folly and clearly illustrates colonial stupidity. a Although the species until quite recently had inhabited the mainland, it is depicted in rock art across the country all the way up into the Northern Territory, it was only present in Tasmania when the colonisers arrived. With it’s fierce jaw and carnivorous appetite it was likened to a wolf and bounties were placed on it. The last known Thylacine died of exposure at the Hobart Zoo in 1936.
