There is something majestic about a giant rainforest tree with Staghorn ferns growing up its trunk and along its branches. Up close some their leaves look like green, wrinkled skin wrapping around the tree to hold on. Other leaves hang down in a green cascade like a water fall, the top of which curve out and their undersides are covered in brown spores. Although these epiphytes are found across Asia and South America as well as Australia, they always make me think of the Big Scrub Rainforest, which used to cover Bundjalung land. They are always showing up in the garden and particularly like germinating on the concrete water tanks.
