These amazing insects can live up to seven years in their larval form before emerging to create a cacophony that is so much part of the Summer landscape in the bush. Cicadas are a very unique insect, apart for their long larval stage they also possess highly complex organs called tymabls that are actaully part of the exoskeleton and vibrate very rapidly to produce a high pitched sound. Each species has unique shaped tymbals to make sound that can be recognised by potential mates.
